Transtibial amputation, or below-knee amputation, is a surgical procedure performed to fully remove a lower limb that has been damaged due to trauma, congenital defect, or disease. Transtibial amputation comprises 23% of all lower-limb amputations. Biomechanics of transtibial gait is the foundation for successful early ambulation training with a transtibial prosthesis. Emphasis will be placed on the terminology most applicable to apply a framework of understanding of the forces placed on the residual limb during ambulation. Introduction Lower extremity amputation uniformly impairs a person’s vocational, social and recreational capacity.

The following are helpful definitions that pertain to amputations: † AKA – Above the Knee Amputation, transfemoral amputation † BKA – Below the Knee Amputation, transtibial amputation † Residual limb – The portion of the leg remaining after an amputation, sometimes referred to as a stump or residuum.
